The Amazing Moon Landing of December 2024!
A special report written for young space explorers
Back to the Moon!
For the first time in over 50 years, humans have walked on the Moon again! On December 19, 2024, astronauts Sarah Wilson and Michael Chen stepped onto the Moon’s surface. They became the first people to walk on the Moon since 1972. That’s even before your parents were born!
The Big Journey
The spaceship that took our astronauts to the Moon was called Starship. It’s much bigger than the spaceships we used to use! Think of a building that’s 17 stories tall – that’s how big Starship is. The spaceship launched from Texas on a clear morning, and it took four days to reach the Moon.
Landing Day
The landing was super exciting! Millions of people watched on their computers and TVs as Starship came down to land. The spacecraft used special rockets to slow down and land softly on the Moon’s surface. When it landed, it kicked up lots of Moon dust, which looked like sparkly grey snow in the sunlight.
Stepping onto the Moon
Commander Sarah Wilson was the first to step out. She said: “With this step, we open a new chapter in human space exploration.” That means we’re starting a whole new adventure in space! Michael Chen stepped out next, and he did a little jump to show how you can bounce really high on the Moon because there isn’t as much gravity as on Earth.
What Did They Do on the Moon?
Our astronauts did lots of cool things during their week on the Moon:
- They collected Moon rocks to bring back to Earth
- They set up solar panels to make electricity from the Sun
- They tested new tools that future astronauts will use
- They planted an advanced weather station
- They took thousands of pictures
- They used special robots to help them explore
Fun Moon Facts They Confirmed:
- The Moon’s dust feels like powder but is very sharp
- You can jump six times higher on the Moon than on Earth
- The ground is hard like cement
- It’s very quiet – you can’t hear anything except through your radio
- The sky is always black, even during the day
- Earth looks like a big blue marble in the sky
Living on the Moon
The astronauts lived in Starship while they were on the Moon. Inside, they had:
- Comfy sleeping bags that floated in the air
- Special space food
- A toilet that works without gravity
- Exercise equipment to keep their muscles strong
- Computers to talk to Earth
- A laboratory to study Moon rocks
Coming Home
After seven days on the Moon, it was time to come home. The astronauts packed up their Moon rocks and important science equipment. Starship’s rockets fired up again, and the spacecraft lifted off from the Moon. Three days later, they landed safely back on Earth in the ocean, where ships were waiting to pick them up.
Why This Was Important
This Moon landing was super important because:
- It showed we can still go to the Moon with new technology
- It tested ways for humans to live on the Moon in the future
- It helped us learn new things about space travel
- It inspired many young people to become scientists and astronauts
What’s Next?
NASA (that’s the space agency that runs these missions) says this is just the beginning! They plan to:
- Build a Moon base where astronauts can live for months
- Test ways to grow food on the Moon
- Practice for future trips to Mars
- Set up telescopes on the Moon’s far side
- Look for water ice in Moon caves
How You Can Learn More
If you want to learn more about the Moon landing:
- Visit NASA’s special kids’ website
- Watch videos from the mission
- Build a model of Starship
- Look at the Moon through a telescope
- Do Moon-related science experiments in school
Fun Activities to Try
- Moon Jump Math:
If you can jump 1 foot high on Earth, how high could you jump on the Moon? Multiply by 6 to find out! - Moon Weight:
Divide your weight by 6 to see how much you’d weigh on the Moon! - Moon Art:
Draw a picture of what you think a Moon base should look like!
Words to Know
- Gravity: The force that pulls things down (it’s weaker on the Moon!)
- Spacecraft: A vehicle that travels in space
- Astronaut: A person trained to travel in space
- Lunar: Anything to do with the Moon
- Mission: A special journey to do important work
- Solar Panels: Special equipment that turns sunlight into electricity
Remember: You might be part of the next group of astronauts to visit the Moon! Keep studying science and mathematics, and maybe someday you’ll get to bounce around on the Moon too!
